James Randall Sellards

James Randall Sellards

James Randall Sellards, 71, of Beckley died Friday, April 16, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House following an extended illness.

Born on July 9, 1938, in Nabob, W.Va., he was the third of six children born to the late Kennis and Ruth Anderson Sellards. A brother, Charles, precedes him in death.

Mr. Sellards spent his childhood at Nabob where he was a gifted baseball player. He was a graduate of Marsh Fork High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. James was a resident of Eccles for over 33 years before moving to the Cabell Heights community in 2007. He worked in the strip mining industry, for over 30 years, as a heavy equipment operator, and he loved his job. He always told his children that he hoped they were “fortunate enough to have a job they loved” as much as he loved his. James enjoyed crossword puzzles and he loved to go fishing with his son “Jaybird.” He attended the Skelton Freewill Baptist Church.

James met his wife, Patty, through her sister who was his sister-in-law; they were married on November 12, 1966. To this union were born three children: Monica Farley and husband Doug of Harper Heights, Lynn Shannon and husband Roderick of Daniels and James Randall Sellards and wife Angela of Shady Spring. He was the doting grandfather of six grandchildren: Sean Luke Farley (deceased), Adrianne Farley, Joshua Farley, Dominique Shannon, James Glen Sellards and Maya Shannon, and twin great-grandchildren Nevaeh and Autumn Dunn. He is also survived by three brothers: Rev. Carl Sellards and wife Corky of Mt. Tabor, Duane Sellards and wife Carol of Beckley and David Sellards and wife Delorise of Glen Daniel; a sister Carolyn Stover and husband Larry of Beckley; and by a large extended family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday, April 19th, in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Carl Sellards and Rev. Gregg Lanham officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call Monday from 2 p.m. until the service time.

Pallbearers will be: Jaybird Sellards, Rodrick Shannon, Steve Barker, Kenny Hatcher, Dominique Shannon, Doug Farley, Joshua Farley and Manuel Yancey.
